The Mint Method for Money Management

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

I recently discovered an amazing money management program. No wait! Before you turn me off, I swear it’s worth a look. I actually had my wife excited about a piece of financial software. So stick with me.

JobTheBook.com

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Thanks to Will for alerting me to this wonderful site created by the guys at Portland Studios. It’s a microsite for a “new” book by John Piper. They’ve taken Piper’s poem about Job and turned it into a painfully beautiful book illustrated by Chris Koelle.

…and so I add yet another thing to my long wishlist of books I can’t afford…

Presidential Prizefight

presidential prizefight home page

If you’ve ever wished presidential races could be won simply by desire, then head on over to presidentialprizefight.com and battle it out as John McCain or Barack Obama. Winning bouts racks up votes for the Republicans or Democrats in an attempt to win over the electoral representation of that state.

It’s somewhat addictive, so beware.

NBA All Star design work

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

I know the 2008 All Star game has been over for more than a month, but I wanted to post a video I finally got my hands on. It was used as a promo/demonstration for a talk Pete Scott was involved in at the NAB Show in April.

The video showcases a new digital product I helped develop for Turner Sports. I did the design for the online video player (I didn’t do the All Star logo, though) and I programmed the On Demand Flash player. Kenny Bunch, a phenomenally smart media development guru, programmed the live stream-switching player. So without further ado:

click the video to play and watch the NBA All Star promo

If that one’s taking a while to load, click here for a lower-bandwidth version of the video.

I just wish all my design pieces could be showcased like this. It would make putting a portfolio together really easy.

If you want, you can still try out the On Demand part of the player on TNT’s website.

I’ve been pirated.

Monday, April 21st, 2008

In the design world, site pirating is when some unscrupulous designer decides to steal your code and/or design elements and/or entire design and repurpose it as his own work. Site pirating has always been a kind of backhanded compliment I’ve never been (un)fortunate enough to get.

Until now. Apparently the Kolkata Knight Riders, an Indian F-1 Racing group cricket team, liked PGA.com’s look. Or, rather, their designer, MediaFont did. Examine for yourself:

comparison of pirated features

I shouldn’t be surprised, though, that MediaFont is into ripping off other site designs. Their own website is a rip-off of MediaTemple.net, the beloved hosting company. See for yourself:

comparison of site pirating of Media Temple by Media Font

Of course, who knows what copyright laws allow in India. International law isn’t my specialty.

Job Listing: Interactive Designer

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

To all my design… umm… homies… Turner has a job opening for an interactive designer, if you’re in the market.

See the position on Creative HotList.

Sacred Audio: conservative Christian music and moreI’ve been working on the design and marketing for a new site called SacredAudio.com. It’s a music site where you can download individual tracks or full albums of conservative Christian music (the BJU-, SoundForth-, Majesty Music-, Wilds-, Steve Pettit-type). I’m still working with the developer on getting the site design exactly like I want it, but the site’s fully functional.

The best part is the free downloads every month. So far they’ve managed to all be pieces I actually wanted. I also enjoy getting to be highly selective in the pieces I want to pay for. Of course, that’s what I love about iTunes as well, but there’s not much conservative Christian music on iTunes.
